Practising intonation with a drone
A drone trains your ear rather than your eyes. Sustain the tonic, then play scales and long tones against it: listen for beats (a slow wobble) and adjust until they vanish. Major thirds sit about 14 cents lower than on a piano and perfect fifths 2 cents higher — the drone teaches you to hear that.
Turn on Add fifth for a richer open-fifth drone, ideal for modal and folk music. Use exact frequency to test equipment or explore alternative standards such as 432 Hz.
