How transposition works
A transposing instrument reads notes a fixed interval away from the sounding pitch. To find what a B♭ clarinettist should read for a concert part, raise everything a major second (2 semitones); for alto saxophone raise a major sixth (9 semitones); for horn in F a perfect fifth (7 semitones). The calculator applies the difference between the two instruments' transpositions and spells the result with sensible sharps or flats.
